Every time I tell someone whose been in Cambridge long enough that I'm here to do Part III of the Mathematical Tripos, their reaction would be "Wow, I heard that's a very hard course", I usually shrug and say that I don't really know yet. But, after a few times a got tired and asked a girl who was kind enough to explain to me what the big deal was. Apparently math at Cambridge is huge (maybe its like Law in IIU) and Part III is claimed to be the hardest course at CMS.
More on Part III. In Cambridge, undergraduates have the option to continue on as a 4th year (first year=Part 1a, second year=Part 1b, third year= Part II). The fourth year a.k.a Part III is also open to students from outside Cambridge, this is where I come in. It is offered as the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Mathematics. Not a masters or a Phd.
On the introduction day, when all the 200 something Part III students met and took pictures(somehow all of us could fit in one picture), an English boy told me that some magazine has ranked Part III as the second hardest course in the world, the first is the some business course in Harvard. He even offered me some advice 'No matter how clever u think u r, there is always someone cleverer'. And I later learned the he did his undergraduate at Cambridge and got first class for all 3 years. So now I'm thinking, what have I got myself into? ^-^'
P/S: with regards to using math or maths, I once argued with a friend about the use of it and googled it, apparently maths is English and math is American- but I don't really care so math or maths with be used interchangeably.
